I was looking in to balancing my radiators but only 2 have the "lockshield" valves. Each has a TRV all upstairs rads also have a valve with + and - symbols on, can these still be balanced in the same way as rads with a lockshield?

What's best way to use a balanced system with the TRVs on highest setting or each room different ie lower setting for unused rooms?

Thanks for any help.

Put all TRV 's to highest settings. The valve on the other side to the TRV is the lockshield ,but sounds like wheel heads are fitted to them ,which isn't a good idea ,as turning the heads will alter the balance.

If one room was set to low or off what effect would it have on the other radiators?

The effect would be the system not fully balanced ,and your wasted time.
Why would you want to have one rad not fully open ?

It just seems a waste of energy to have an unused box room the same temperature as living room for example?

When balancing the system the trv s would be fully open. Once balanced you can set them to whatever you like ? What do you think " balancing " means ? We may be talking at crossed purposes .

ok listen clearly we have a few people who seriously know what they are talking about . I thank you !!!

I have various issues :
1) a non understanding of how a trv not on the inlet of water is of any use ? add to that how do I balance that rad ? the hit water hits the trv after I would be turning the lockshield valve ?
please assume I know what a lockshield valve is , a trv and the bleed screw.
2) I have had to stop balancing first two rads as I simply don't know how to balance the rad with trv on outlet . I don't understand how it can work ?

So set 7 rad system back to 21.5 Deg and all trvs set at 3.
I'm trying to think what readings should I get when system been like that for an hour ? on inlet and outlet on each rad.

I know this is not hard but I cannot get where I'm setting the temperature on rads

p.s I now have the Lazer thermo device. very good. just not clear what I'm looking for

Did that take 6 years to arrive !!!
The TRV would be set to fully open on all rads when balancing the system. The lock shield valve is used to balance the system.
It doesn't really matter if TRV is on the flow or return pipework as it's almost certain to be bidirectional.
Check the body of the TRV's, should have 2 arrows to show this , do they ?

I will have a look on the valve bodies.

In a diagram is what I have for the top floor on the first two radiators. This as it is after 1 hour of messing about. both radiators now set to three.

I'll do if you say regarding the full balancing tomorrow. It's very hard to find the exact sequence but I think I have it roughly.

ok iv had a look for arrows.

the two top rads 1&2 as per diagram have this image . 1st one. I can't see the other side of there are arrows. but no two arrows.

3 down stairs have the two arrows as per picture no 2

The remaining two downstairs one in the front window doesn't have an LRV.
The last one in the chain I think is in a new downstairs bathroom and again can't see any arrows.
