Balancing with no flow/return access at boiler?

I'm going to be looking at balancing my heating system, I have 2 thermometers ready to go however the flow and return pipework at the boiler are boxed in pretty much as soon as they exit. I can see the pipes, but there isn't enough room to attach the thermometers! I'm wondering if it will be good enough to check the temps at the flow and return when they hit and leave the airing cupboard instead? The pipework between the boiler and cupboard would at a guess be around 6m long.
