I have recently fitted a new basin and monoblock mixer tap. I need some help on how to tighten the block to the basin. The tap came with a short piece of brass screwed rod, with a hexagon lock nut. The rod has a cross head recess in the end for a screwdriver. What ever I do I cannot get the thing tight enough. I screw the nut by hand as tight as it will go, but if I use a screwdriver on the rod to tighten it up - the nut backs off and gets looser. There isn't enough room to get in with a wrench. This must be a common problem. What do the professionals do?

The stud is supposed to be screwed into the tap body before you offer onto the basin.

So, make the screw tight using the screwdriver, then install the tap, then use the box spanners that you're about to buy to do the nut up.
