I've got a new basin and tap for the nathroom. When I went to connect the pop up basin waste which came with the tap to a fairly standard looking bottle trap I found that it wouldn't tighten up. The threads fit, the pipe is the same size and it should all go together but the plastic compression nut on the bottle trap can't be tightened enough as there is another nut on the side of the waste where the pop up waste control rod goes in.

Am I missing something or do I need a specific type of trap?

when i connect the trap to the bottom threads, the nut fouls on the nut for the rod on the left as looked at in this drawing.

You could try doubling up the washer in the trap and or ptfe tape around the the chrome waste.
Silicone inside the nut would also do the job but you would have to leave it to go off

thanks for the advice. Was very close to going with the silicone idea but after a lot of searching and trial and error I found a trap that fitted (chromed brass from Screwfix for about £12).

Turns out that although B&Q sell the tap and waste, they don't stock a trap to fit it!
