Hiya, first time poster. I have cleverly broken my sink that needs replacing. So far, so good. The sink is a countertop type that sits on a unit. The problem I have is that the nut that attaches the plug hole the to the sink is in a very small hole in the unit that the fitter made and there is no way I can get to the plastic nut with a standard spanner or a pair of grips. I will need to use a box spanner and a tommy bar to loosen this off but I do not know the size of the size the plastic nut. It seems huge, about 60mm. I am hoping that these are a standard size and someone can help me put by telling me the size box spanner I'll need so i can buy just one, rather than guessing and ending up buying a few. Thanks in advance.

A pic would help enormously. Could it be a basin you are talking about rather than as sink and it's the basin waste nut? They can be different sizes I'm afraid. Chances are the installer fitted the waste to the basin before installing it onto the counter top.

Hi, Thanks for your reply. It is a basin yes. Apologies. Here are some pictures of the basin, and the underside of the unit with the waste attached and then when it is undone. The problem is getting to the black plastic nut as it is so tight. I've tried lifting the basin out with the waste disconnected but it is not for coming at all. The basin is not held down with any sealant or anything as it rotates a little if I try.

The plastic bottle trap's top 'nut' will or should be only hand tight. Undo that and then what you do with the broken basin is up to you.

Turn off H & C water supplies to the basin just in case.

Disconnect the waste / trap (looks like you've already done that).
Remove basin complete with waste...
NB It's likely to be siliconed on to the counter top so needs a suitable thin blade to cut through that sealant all around -- a wallpaper stripper might work.

Once off the black nut and waste will also be siliconed in place (probably) so removal with sink out will be easier.

The new sink and waste can be fitted in a reverse process. Myself, I'd fit a brand new flip/swivel waste such as this example https://www.wolseley.co.uk/product/wirquin-wbk97w-basin-waste-spinner-slotted-11-4-chrome-plated/ or this

Edit: You may need to undo the U-shaped tap fixing to leave the tap loose enough on the flexis to get the sink and waste out, as mentioned by someone else, earlier.

No need to remove the black nut, that won't be holding the basin down, getting the basin off the unit's countertop is all that's needed, the waste and nut etc will come with it.

Chances are it has silicone holding it down onto the counter top, cutting through that will be the challenge, cheese wire may be the only possible option there and even then depending on how much has been used. As suggested by @foxhole, smashing the basin may be the only other way it's coming off.
