How would these most likely be secured to the wall? A surface mounted kit? Or a backplate elbow in the wall? I need to remove the valve and put a new washer in it, but am concerned to disturb anything in the wall. Thanks

Could be either , but undoing the two nuts is unlikely to disturb what's behind the covers.

Water off, undo nuts, unscrew plastic cone covers. You'll either have wall plates or z bolts beneath

And taking the shower off to renew washers shouldn't disturb this?
Having re-read your post are you only wanting to replace the rubber washers behind the fixing nut of the mixer bar? If so then you should be ok. If it's z bolts you may find they turn slightly but you won't know until you try.

If just mixer bar washers, then it should be water off, undo mixer, replace washers, refit, pressurise and test. That's assuming all goes smoothly.

I have changed dozens ,and never loosened anything behind the covers in doing so.
