I need to replace the waste for my bath, I think I replaced the old one not that long ago but its rusting and falling apart.

I seem to recall that the last time I replaced this the seal between the bath and waste was a pain to fit without any leaks, the bath isn't new so doesn't have a nice smooth finish and probably has some silicone leftover from the last time I did this.

What would be your method of choose when replacing? Would you even attempt to use the rubber seal or chuck it in the bin straight away.

Then what would be the preferred option between plumbers mait and silicone?

Just do a comprehensive job of cleaning the surfaces and use a good quality seal kit. Silicone or Mait is the next best thing to a bodge.

Mait = ickky ickky goo .... I curse the maker of mait when I go to a job and it's been used and the item needs removed/replaced. It's an absolute mare to get off anything it gets on and that's usually everywhere.

A little silicone will always help with the seal on an uneven finish on a waste.

Hope this is clean enough
Waiting for a part to arrive tomorrow

I’ve had the same faff before, and what saved my sanity was using a decent rubber washer paired with a thin smear of silicone around the underside of the flange. I’ve also used silicone rubber for other bathroom seals and it’s held up really well, especially around moisture. Plumbers mait can work, but I find it messy and it can shift over time, so I stick with rubber plus silicone.

Plastic bath waste does not rust ?

Nor does chrome plated brass. I will go against what other suggest, and suggest the Mait. Yes, it is horrible stuff, sticks to everything, but surely that is a big positive? Sticking to everything, it is certain to form a seal, and never sets. I've found it works, when nowt else does work. Just put plenty on, then tighten slowly, to squeeze it out, then scrape off the surplus.
