Bathroom basin pop up arm rod replacement

My bathroom basin pop up arm rod has broken due to corrosion, can i simply buy a replacement one like this: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B07R1KWBCL

Any idea why this rusted in the first place? Has the existing nylon ball failed and let water escape?

More that probably, or the cup it sits in. Just replacing the rod arm and ball will probably go the same way, if you can actually get that screw cap off, if it isn't rusted on solid and then hope it doesn't leak badly once it's back together.

I'd replace the whole thing.

Thanks fore the advice, i will get a new waste this morning.

Now, I am unsure how to remove the existing waste? There is no nut between the waste and basin. That off white ring in the photo is brittle material that can be broken away with my fingers but underneath there is no nut?

The whole thing is the nut.
Silver waste twists off while you jam something down the throat to hold the inner part.

New waste and trap now installed.

Now just clean the rest of the plumbers mait off that backnut!

Or are they apprentice marks?
