Bathroom downlight positions...help needed please

Hi All,

Below is a sketch of our bathroom. We've just had the ceiling replastered and the 3 downlights removed and the holes filled in. What I'm looking for is advice as to where to install 4 new downlights please. You should see from the sketch that the vanity unit above has lights so that area doesn't need any. The bathroom measure 2.67 metres wide by 2.29 metres deep.

Double the number of lights, double the chance of one of them failing.

If you have 4 downlights then I would install them equidistance from the centre on the diagonals probalbly 1 to 1.5 metres depending on where the ceiling joists are

Always fancied arranging like the great bear, OK silly I know, but when in a bath, one does not want one shining in one's eyes, the larger the surface area of the lamp, the better, but I swapped mine for 0.58 watt from Pound World as did not what them to look as if they had failed, but they were horrid when lying in the bath. Then fitted pods, so could be aimed away from the bath.

I also have a fitting with 4 pods in the kitchen, hate the thing, was there when we bought the house, swapped to all smart bulbs so I can select which are lit.

So behind the slope of the bath, so not shining in your eyes, and away from the bath enough so they can be aimed not to shine in the bath, @endecotp likely has the best answer, but you don't like that, you can get defused discs to go below the down light to spread the light, the GX5.3 is a larger down light

and will spread the light better. But once you fit a diffusing disc you may as well fit a lamp that size to start with.

That is a bit ugly IMO but I have 2 of these in my kitchen and give a great evenly distributed light and are very slim

I have a pair quite similar, but around 8w, those are combined with some local task lighting - one in the cooker hood, a second tucked away, behind the m/wave which is on wall brackets. Which is where most of the food prep is done. It's a rather awkward space for under wall cabinet lights, so we have none.... The area is very well lit.

The only cupboard over worktop, is the gas boiler cupboard, in the corner, so I didn't bother, the rest of the worktop is under a wide kitchen window. Instead, I added a row of wall cupboards along the back wall, which comprise a sort of dinning area, sitting area. There would be no point, to adding under cupboard lights to those.

I used to have 6 eyeball downlights in a zig zag pattern down the galley type kitchen and each pointing at the opposite work top but I still needed under counter lights. But with just 2 of these I no longer need the under counter lighting although the kitchen is now all white with gloss white doors where before they were a mid green shaker style but the worktop is now a dark grey before it was a light beach.

Good idea, so when you lay back in the bath and close your eyes at least you have a meaningful pattern burned into your retina, rather than a boring grid. But on the other hand, and like @pete01 ‘s pattern, you need five lights, and dazzystar only has four.

do seem a better idea, my problem is working out how much light an area needs, my living room has an eight leg chandelier with 8 x 6 watt bulbs, which I feel is still a bit on the dark side, but in bedroom I use a table lamp with a 10 watt smart bulb set to 10% for most of the time.

So fitting GU10 smart bulbs, at around £5 each, so one can dim them right down, so 2.4 watt at 10% that may be reasonable in the bath, but can turn up to 24 watt for other use, I find the Nest Mini speakers still hear me even if not in that room, and although dimming switches often only dim to 50% smart bulbs do go down to 10% and could even turn to blue so looks like an avatar!

Yes its like your picture but that one is recessed so you need a massive hole but the one i posted was 15mm deep surface mounted and the cleaver thing is that the spring clip is adjustable to fit any pre existing hole where your downlights once were.
Also yes that is the beauty of the GU10 as you can just buy brighter bulbs if you got it wrong.
Initially I brought a lower wattage one but it broke so I returned it but also after seeing that it was not bright enough I opted for the next one up while I had the chance.
You can get dimmable ones that work off your light switch by turning it on and off quickly until you have selected the brightness and it them remembers that setting. .
