Hi Guys
My old fan had burnt out and the cable coming out if the wall and fan had a neutral, permanent live and switch live. The new one my landlord pick up one that has only a permanent live and neutral. Can i wire the permanent and switch live together so it turns on and off with the light switch.

Cheers for you help

No, just connect the switched live and neutral and
terminate the permanent live and cpc (earth) safely.

It has no timer over-run.

No, it would never stop.

Just connect the switched live and neutral and

Thanks for that mate.

so i connect the switch live on the cable into the permanent live on the fan and neutral as normal. Then maybe use scotch blocks on to the earth and permanent on the cable to isolate them.

Yes - I forgot - you will need a link (short piece of wire) between PL and SL.

So it doesn't actually matter which connector you use for the SL wire.

No link wire needed, he has a new fan with L and N only.
Connect switch live to the L, N to N and the other two go into separate pieces of terminal block.
Just to double check, it is definitely a mains fan and has no earth terminal (should have a square in square symbol on it)?

The cable coming out of the wall has an earth, but the fan doesn't. so ive used blocks to isolate the earth and Permanent live.

Cheers for you help guys this is wicked!!! :D

Does the bathroom have a window?

If it has no window then it must be a timer fan or its going to get all wet, steamy and mouldy in there!

Oh yes, silly me. Getting confused by the voices again.

I wondered why I didn't mention it the first time.

No window. ( dont know why) Built on the cheep. Lovely place though. Ill just have to keep the door and light on for 10 minutes.

TBH.
You pay your landlord. He supplies the amenities and makes money out of your rent. He should have paid a qualified person to fit it. Personally, with dropping a fan off and leaving you to sort it out he has:
(a)Possibly put your life in danger if you haven't a clue what you are doing.
(b)Avoided his duty of care. Which I believe is a legal requirement.
(c)Saved himself, I dunno, say £40?

Next time.
You pay the rent, he has to cover legally (b) and morally (a) and he should cover (c) which he'll just have to take on the chin as he's charging you to live there.

For 'he' maybe read 'she'.

Its landlords that do tricks like this that really pee me off! Grrrrr!!!!
