Sorry, I agree with you it is two way.
More than once, when I've been tasked with converting from purely switched to overrun with no chance of changing the cable due to the way it's buried and decorated, I've removed the electronics from the fan housing and fitted it in an enclosure in the loft where the cable originates at the bathroom light. That won't be any good for a humidistat or occupancy PIR version though.
