Hello. I have just moved into my house and cannot turn the bathroom light off. The previous owners did have a chandelier light fitted that they removed. I think they may have wired it up incorrectly when they fitted the pendant.

The switch also controls an extractor fan which works fine.

Any advice anyone could give would be ACE.

Cheers

The two reds and the brown from ceiling in the far right set of terminals need to go in the middle set of terminals.

The two cores in the middle set of terminals need to go into the far right set of terminals.

That's how it looks to me.

Double check all your earths are in the earth terminal too.

Bit of a mess if I'm honest.

If after that the fan works oddly (no timer, or not at all), the two fan lives would need swapping around.

Is it just me or have the previous owners replaced one stupid bathroom light with another stupid bathroom light? I didn't think pendants were allowed due to their dangly nature which could encroach onto zones . . .

Or may not.

It's more likely they would be considered unsuitable for the environment but -

ask your Granny what they have had since they got electrickery.

The regs used to frown on dangly bits in the bathroom, which made life a bit awkward, to say the least.

They also used to insist on the wearing of a skirt.

But thankfully they are more chilled out these days.

Thanks for your advice. I made the changes and the light switches on and off now!

However the fan will not turn off now. Well it did for 10 mins. But now it won't turn on at all now, my dodgy wiring skills perhaps?

At least the light works!

This what I did:

You've posted two photos of the connectors, but we can't see which of those individual wires come from which cables. Perhaps you could write out a table like this:

Cable 1: Red goes to connector 1, Black goes to connector 3
Cable 2: Blue goes to connector 2
etc. etc.

Also, do I see red insulation tape around green/yellow sleeving? What exactly is going on there?

It looks like some of your wiring is black/red and some is blue/brown; it might give a clue if we knew what colours were inside the switch and fan.

I don't mean to express any prejudice or disapproval with this, but I personally tend to steer clear of the old dangly-bits-and-a-skirt combination.

Still - what you do is your choice.
