Hi guys, this is going to be my first electrics effort and I'm sure this has been asked a number of times.....

I currently have a ceilling rose which has
- an earth wire connected to a terminal on it
- a connection block that has wires connected in the following order
* grey flex out to the current bulb fitting (assume neutral)
* two black neutrals
* three red loops
* live wire
* grey flex out to current bulb fitting (assume live)

My new light fitting has a connection block for
- one live
- one earth
- one neutral
- one loop

So logic suggests I have two options
Option 1
Connect the earth and the two grey flex to the new connection block

Option 2
Connect the two neutral, one live, 3 loops and one earth to the new connection block

Which is option is the right way to go??

Thanks in advance!

You're lucky - you have a 4 terminal block in the new light. There should be capacity to cram all the wires you describe into this connection block.

The "2 black neutrals" go to the neutral of the lamp.
The "3 red loops" go to the "spare" connector in the lamp (with nothing else connected to this)
The "live wire" goes to the "live" of the lamp
And of course, you have an earth, dont you?

All this is in "for reference" sticky. There are plenty of diagrams to help if you get stuck!

Thanks for that.

I read the FAQ but there is nothing like a bit of reassurance.

If I can't fit them all into the new terminal block does it matter if all of the wires are not in the same terminal block?

I.e. leave the loops in the existing block and run the live, neutral and earth to the new one in the lamp?

If you want to, leave the old ceiling rose alone, and bung it in the loft / ceiling, and fit a 3-core flex in the place of the 2-core, this way you can have an earth. Run this new flex to the new light. Easy peasy.
