I am getting my bathroom redone, including lowering the ceiling slightly and fitting recessed lighting.
What are the relative advantages and disadvantages of low voltage vs normal voltage recessed lights?
How much clearance above do they usually need to function safely?

Can anyone give me the advice that I really need: ie which is better for a bathroom: low voltage or normal voltage recessed lighting? The bathroom fitter is happy to put in whatever, and I have no idea which would be better.
Thank you in anticipation.

I would say to tell the bathroom fitter to stick to what he has sufficient knowledge to do properly, he should not be "happy to put in what ever". You have not given enough info for anybody to advise you, there are varying factors that govern the type of lighting you can instal in a bathroom.
