Depends where it's going and if you are tiling it into wall, should match tile depth if tiling , 6mm nice and strong if there is a risk of breakage.
 
its also good practice to either safety back the mirror or use mirror adhesive to stick it to the wall used properly the adhesive will hold the pain to gether if it was ever broken. as previously mentioned 6mm fits on well with tiling but if saftey backed 4mm would suffice.
 
forgive me, but isn't this just common sense?

like a 20mm thick mirror would withstand Krakatoa, and a 1mm mirror, wouldn't withstand your average Joe farting...!

so maybe somewhere in the middle?
