I'm about to install some spot lights in the ceiling of my bathroom, one of which will be above the shower. Do they have to be low voltage or can I use 240v versions?

If low voltage, can I run multiple spots off one transformer? Also what is the typical wattage of a low voltage halogen bulb?

lights for bathrooms have to be suitable (due to high water content of air)

as for number of lights/ transformer that depends on wattage of lights and wattage of transformer

average light 20watts

Depends what zone they are in. The one above the shower will need to be sealed to IP65 which is likely to be 12v.

Best to use 1 trans per fitting

ceiling downlighters usually 50watts

IP rating is nothing to do with voltage. And the requirement is for IPx4, not IP65.

DL - how far above the shower is it? If it's in Zone 2 you can have a mains one if you want.

DLaing,

I went for low voltage ones, each one with its own transformer. Felt safer with 12v rather than 240v. They are < 2.25m above the base of the shower (do a search on zone 1, 2 and 3 for bathrooms and you'll get some measurements about what kind of lights you can fit where e.g http://www.lightfan.co.uk/lightinf02.htm), so I got zone 1 approved lights from a shed (B&Q). 20W. 2 of them. I buried the transformers in the roof, but in zone 3, so only the bulbs were in zone 1.

They work great, and have rubber seals around them to stop the moisture going up into the roof void.
