I am cosidering installing low voltage 35W halogen spots in the ceiling of my front room. Do I need to fit hoods above them? Also it is advisable to fit the transformer in any particular place?

no hood required unless there is another seperate dwelling above your living room.

fit the transformer in an accessible place. If you have a small electronic transformer, its good to fit it next to one of the lights - just push it through the hole where the light sits. Then, when it blows, you can easily replace it.

there is a bedroom above the living room and a loft above that. by separate dwelling do you mean like a flat or similar?

If there is dwelling space above then fire protection is required why not fit these

Also why do you want to fit LV lights as mains halogen will be cheaper
Go away and read your regs book!

FTAO the OP, yes, i meant a flat / maisonette kind of thing, if theres a seperate dwelling above, you NEED fire hoods in order to stop the spread of fire to the other dwelling. If its part of your house, there's no need whatsoever to fit fire hoods.

You are correct

Anyway I think it's good practise to fit fire rated down lights as the radiant heat given off by them is less.
