Hopefully a simple question. Am i right in thinking that the area around the sink (floor to 60cm above taps) is zone 2 and not 1?

The picture in the Reference sticky shows this, but all the stuff i've read in guides and found on the NICEIC etc web pages don't seem to mention the sink.

Cheers

Might be Zone 3 - depends how close it is to the bath/shower.

Must admit I'd never properly looked at that diagram in For Reference - I think it's wrong - it certainly refers to an old version of the regs, and an old amendment.

it is just about the distance from the bath or shower, if it can be touched by stretching (whilst stood in bath or shower) then Zone 2, if it can be touched without stretching, Zone 1, if it is in the reach of splashes, Zone 3
Not from bs:7671 but i think might explain it

Ring Lighting has a good diagram of zones around a sink, but cannot find it. If you're stuck, nip into a shed and look at the box or instructions of a ring bathroom fitting.

I was under the impression that there was. I have seen many diagrams detailing such an area to be avoided as splash risk.

Found this: http://alric.co.uk/lg4.html

The IEE, it says, does not extend zones to the basins, but the Lighting Association have a code of practice where the members (ie the likes of Ring) treat areas around basins differently.

So where does that leave the simple filiament lamp and no transformer shaver socket above the basin?

Its fine, providing it is suitably constructed for the task. (I.e the designers have thought for a few seconds and its not in the line of fire of the taps.)
I suggest the total absence of accident stats for such fittings, and even the near non-existant acident rate for the other european countries where non-isolated sockets are allowed in bathrooms, also means its OK, it just feels wrong to those people used to our more cautious UK attitude..

I'm not quite sure what you mean.

You either choose to go with the regs, or with the advice of the Lighting Association, but in either case, the fitting has to be suited the the zone it is mounted within.

remember the no sockets in bathrooms rules says NOTHING about zones it bans them in the whole room (transformer isolated shaver sockets are a special exception)
