As a quick reminder,

EE (and your house WiFi) uses the following mobile phone frequencies:
<806MHz = TV Signal
__800MHz = 4G
1,800MHz = 2G & 4G
2,100MHz = 3G & 4G
2,500MHz = 2.5GHz WIFI
2,600MHz = 4G
3,400MHz = 5G
5,000MHz = 5GHz WIFI

In summary
2G carries the least information per second but travels the furthest distance (needs less masts).
4G carries the medium information per second and travels medium distance (needs masts).
5G carries the most information per second but travels the shortest (needs more masts).
The higher the frequency the more that trees, walls, clothes, rain, etc will stop the signal (for example we have all seen how 5GHz WIFI is fast but only works in one room).
There are almost no 'true' 5G masts (most are still 4G pretending to be 5G).
4G coverage is still terrible, so imagine how long it is going to take for 5G to be installed.

So:
If you are worried about 5G mobile phones, STOP using your 3G / 4G phone and your WIFI to make your YourTube videos as they are basically the same frequency as 5G.
If you were wanting to use mobile phone signals for nefarious reasons, don't use 5G but use 3G. Its coverage is infinitely better, it does actually go through walls and trees, and it transmits a good amount of data.

So why bother with 5G ?

High Data Rate - if have have a factory that has many machine making things very fast you can send all that data back to a central computer to analyse it.
Can makes big improvements to production, checking on accuracy of production, machine wear, vibration, etc
Or get large amounts of real time data from patent in ambulance as it drives to hospital so medial crew are ready (or can advise Paremadics on route)

or Low Latency -
Have very short delays, so can have someone operating with a robot handle on one country and patent in another.

or Low Power
Can have sensors in fields/warehouses/factories that can monitor location/temp/vibration of stock and stay active for many years without batteries.

or High Data Rate and Low Latency -
needed for self driving cars.

(note that cannot have all three at the same time, very fast data uses a lot of power)

how do they make (5G) faster than 3/4G?

As you increase the frequency you can transmit more 0's and 1's. (but it takes more power to do this so it travels less far as you cannot simply turn up the power at the mast).
So (in simple terms) 5GHz WIFI can transmit twice as much data as 2.5GHz WIFI:

2,500MHz = 2.5GHz WIFI
2,600MHz = 4G
3,400MHz = 5G
5,000MHz = 5GHz WIFI

The following shows the frequency increase for each 'G' and this is seen as an increase in the data rate - I have also put the technology inventions that came about because of this increase in data rate. Will be interesting to see what 5G brings (it might not be seen by consumers, but only by industry).

1,800MHz = 2G. >>>text messages on mobile phones
2,100MHz = 3G. >>>Emails on Blackberry
2,600MHz = 4G. >>>Internet on iPhone
3,400MHz = 5G. >>>??

A bit like a giant microwave, the more power, the quicker you fry stuff (brains etc).
Sort of. More power increases the hight of the waves (ie more ac voltage), but does not change the frequency. More power makes waves bigger so can travel further before the height becomes smaller and not able to be detected by phone.
And too much power at the mast overheats the aerials.

Microwaves to cook food are at 915MHz and 2,450MHz.

Notice that these numbers are the same as above for 4G!!!!!!!!
So you could say that "4G masts and Phones could be used to Microwave people" (infact that was the last conspiracy).

But the 4G aerials are the wrong shape, they transit 360degrees, there are buildings/trees/clothes/rain in the way (all good at absorbing microWaves), they masts are a long way from people, the power drops 1/r^2, and you would need A MONSTER LOT of power (uWaves are 1.4kW and still take a long time to cook my small jacket potato). And finally there is more money to be made selling telephones.

Funny how we forget old conspiracies once we get used to using the technology. Would you now want more or less phone masts and WiFi boxes?

From 2002...
Two oil companies agreed yesterday to give a full list of their petrol stations where mobile phone masts are sited after hundreds of the transmitters were secretly erected on forecourts across Britain. Shell confirmed it had 210 "pico-cell" mobile phone base stations concealed in forecourt price signs. Rival Texaco also promised details of its 20 stations with transmitters.

The McDonald's fast-food chain insisted antennae fixed to walls of 120 restaurants were safe, claiming: "We are talking about power less than 10 to 20 times baby-listening devices many people have at home." A spokesman said they decided not to identify the outlets with antennae, but might put them on its website "for interested customers".

Pressure groups condemned the sitings, despite official denials that the transmitters posed a health risk. [] the director of Mast Sanity, which campaigns against them, accused mobile operators of exploiting a loophole in the law covering satellite dishes and radio aerials to bypass planners. Shell and McDonald's said all relevant authorities had been informed. But with each cell worth £1,000 a year to the site's owner, critics say commercial considerations have been paramount.
