Hi all,.. just asking this question out of curiosety really....My sister has just had a repair to her boiler, involving renewing the flue fan, replacing the insulation and replacing the rubber o rings on the heat exchanger connections, the engineer also fitted a larger external expantion vessel on the central heating pipe, not sure if its on the flow or return, but the question is,what would be the reason for the external expantion vessel,..she wasnt there when he called so was not told what had been done in any detail......£285,including a service, does that sound about right,..

Boiler manufacturers fit the biggest vessel that will fit into the interior of the boiler, there are occasions where the boiler's vessel is not big enough for the size of system that it is connected to. - The other issue with vessels occurs when the on board vessel fails, it is often not practical to replace the onboard vessel due to the extent of dismantling required in this instance it is common to fit an external vessel as has hapened in your case - as for the price for the amount of work that has been carried out the price paid seems reasonable! (it would be a good idea to ensure that the boiler is serviced once per year, as this often avoids hefty repairs and bills in the long term! ;)
