No , hot water plate hex its rectangular , not connected to gas

No need but good practice to shut gas off.
Plate HE is water to water.

Hahaha. Yes the wife will be at work. Fortunately no kids yet.
Mains have always been switched off when doing work.
Should i just clean HE with water or can anyone recommend any other solutions

Yeah just buy a new one , just make sure ex vessel is pumped up prior to removal

If u go for a while valve change take the pcb out before hand , but Yh let us know what u did and the outcome

Shall bare that in mind however if i drain the boiler correctly and turn off water mains i dont think i will effect it

You can clean the PHE with spirit of salts... Carefully! But you might need new o rings.
