My problem is that the hot water doesn't come on unless the central heating is switched on. There is a pin with a disc on it which raises when the heating is switched on, making an electrical connection, I think. This doesn't happen when the water is turned on. Should it?

Any advice would be gratefully received

Diverters are common to fail on these

Thanks for the response. I'm not sure what the diverter is, however, or, how easy it would be to fix. are there any instructions anywhere. I've looked on the Internet but haven't found anything useful so far
