I've been asked by a friend about a boiler issue but as I'm struggling to think of or find of any info I thought I'd ask here.

Basically the yellow warning light flashes while the boiler tries to ignite then after 5 or 6 attempts it locks out(red light comes on).
It then needs to be reset several times then the yellow light comes on but then goes off and locks out.
It's also making what's described as a static crackle when trying to light.

Any ideas?

Well I've now been and had a look at the boiler and typically it was working when i got there but after repeatedly testing it I managed to get it to play up.

It appears that it is trying to fire up but when it plays up there is a electrical arcing(fizzing is the only way I can descibe it) from the ignition PCB and occasionally you can physically see arcing on the back of the ignition PCB so I've gone ahead and ordered a new one.

Fingers crossed it'll sort the problem :?:

We are not allowed to give gas advice on this forum.

You MIGHT cure the fault with a new PCB.

However, I can think of a couple of faults which could cause that symptom which are not related to the PCB which I would be checking first before buying an expensive PCB.

I realise that there are restrictions on what can be done with boilers and would not even contemplate working on any area that could effect the gas/ integrity of the boiler but as this is pointing towards an electrical fault I am happy to continue with my investigations.

I am aware that this may not be the cure but in my experience a circuit board should not arc across soldered joints.

Are you going to share what other thins you believe could cause this fault Tony???

Since they are related to a part of the boiler which should not be accessed by a DIYer then I cannot mention them here.

Even if I did they would be deleted by a mod as inappropriate advice.

Thanks for your input Tony, you could have saved yourself some typing and just stuck 2 fingers up instead

I realise there is very little a DIYer should be doing with a boiler however my interpretation of this website is not necessarily for people to find out how to do tasks themselves but to allow people to educate themselves so that when they do have to rely on some of the "so called experts" they don't feel like they're having their pants pulled down.

If someone chooses to attempt something then the liability lands with that person.

If I was to give you some inappropriate advice, even if you yourself were able to do it safely then it would still be read by hundreds of others some of whom were totally unsafe.

Even today there was a thread by someone who wanted to mend a leaking gas pipe with sticky tape!

Liability can extend very widely when people want to try to make some money from litigation.

Encouraging someone without sufficient skills would be very risky. So it would be for the website for publishing it.

You may remember people are in jail for encouraging rioting just on facebook or twitter!

That's fair enough and I can accept your and rationale for not providing any info.
I totally agree that some people are just dangerous.

I'm just hoping that when I am able to report my findings that it helps someone else if they're ever in a similar situation and don't know where to turn through fear of being ripped off.

Turns out it was the ignition PCB as suspected. Found cracked soldered terminals on the circuit board so decided to replace pcb rather than try and repair.
