Hello All! I just found this site completely by chance, and my first post may help in solving a problem that 3 local plumbers haven't been able to.

My parents moved house a couple of years ago. A Baxi Solo 2 50RS boiler had been installed maybe 3 years before that. It seems that although the installation is relatively new, they can't have the hot water functioning without the heating. I'm not in any way going to be carrying out work myself as my plumbing skills stop at replacing sink plugs, but is this an inherent problem with this boiler? Can it be solved by replacing the timer/fitting a cylinder thermostat/anything else?

Apologies if this is covered elsewhere, but I hope somebody out there has some suggestions. Thanks! :)

boiler is definately older than 3 years if its solo 2 as they stopped making it about 7 years ago :?

Anyways your problem is almost certainly with a diverter valve somewhere :? have you got one  3 port valve or 2 x 2ports

Not the boiler's fault there though!

You have to findout what's supposed to be controlling the system, and which bit isn't working. Depends what you've got. Programmer/timer could be it but...

Thanks for the fast replies chaps! I guessed from a quick trawl through the site that this wasn't a popular system to work on or live with.
Gaz, I thought the system was older than had been said by the house seller - I'll show your suggestion to the next plumber who tries his hand. I'm afraid it makes no sense to me, but maybe it'll point him in the right direction.
Chris R, I think you are right - from my very limited experience the programmer looks dodgy (technical term!). It doesn't seem to have the necessary scope of control.
Once again, thanks for the replies. I'm glad I wandered in!

In case this alters anyone's view or triggers something with anybody else, I've found out that the programmer is a Potterton EP2002. The customer guide seems to indicate that hot water and central heating can only come on together, though there's an 'off' position on the CH slider which doesn't seem to make any difference (I've really got to learn more about CH systems!)

WHen there isn't a single likely fault jumping off the screen, all to often it turns out the system was never wired up correctly in the first place...
(Or something obvious has been forgotten!)

The switches on the ep 2000 can be locked so that the hot water is shown to come on with the heating....used for gravity hot water systems. If you have a standard y or s plan system (1 x 3 port motorized valve or 2 x 2 ports) and it is wired up correctly you can unlock the switches by removing the front of the clock and adjusting the tab on the back.

No need to be rude mate im only trying to give some bloke advice on his heating system which by the way has nothing to do with the Baxi boiler :? and i personally think that the Solo was one of the best boilers made by baxi  i have a solo 2 in my house which has had no problems in the 5 years ive been here
