I have a 20A radial running through my kitchen with exactly 2 single gang sockets on it (one powers the fridge, and the other the extractor fan).

I wanted to install an extra socket on it to run my dishwasher (which is currently powered by an extension cable coming from the flat ring main (there is only one ring in the house).

So because its a kitchen area according to the Part P the work should be notifiable right?

Thats what I thought, so I merrily ring hackney Building Control office to inquire about their reporting procedure, and when speaking to the surveyor he said: 'Oh we classify that as minor work and it doesn't have to be notified'. 'what? but its in a kitchen' I replied. 'Well we use common sense, a single socket on a radial isn't something we feel to be notified about', he continued. 'Even in a kitchen?', my bewilderment rising. 'Yes even there', setting my mind to rest.

After the conversation and sitting down to take it all in (and finish my coffee) I thought, maybe I just got someone who couldn't be bothered, so I rang back, and spoke to someone else about this.. it certainly was someone else, as she was female :D She said pretty much the same thing.

I may well call back and ask for that in writing, but I'm just wondering if anyone has had anything similar happen to them in this regard.

If you spoke to 2 people who said it doesn't need notifying just accept it. Don't push your luck by asking for it in writing. It's a pretty hefty fee just for adding a single socket so be happy you don't have to pay for the privilege.

from my experience it seems the council dont know what they are talking about over all this. you get one tale then another or a sense of cant be botheredness.

it all seems a waste of money and typifies the nanny state we live in.

The only people benefitting are electricians (who i dont particularly want im my house cos im funny like that and trust no one) and borough council coffers - to swell them further than the rip off council tax already does.

i can see building regs being notifyable for flushing the bog very soon.

Yeah, I'm not going to slash in your cold water tank.

I might slash on your consumer unit, though...

My uncle & my father once pee'd on an electric fence.....

[emoticon with very watery eyes]

I will give you an example!

Electrician comes to install a circuit for the Dojo laundry room. Points for two washing machines and two tumble dryers.

On depatrture one dryer doesnt work.

I insepct.

Wire to the fused spur not even connected and in another spur wire placed in live terminal but terminal not screwed down.

Think I have a right to be sceptical.

You need to be more careful with the electricians you chose, you can't assume every electrician is useless just because you picked a lemon.

ok heres another couple

British Gas engineer leaving the cover off the mains connector to my boiler at home - cover falls off revealing live terminals as he never screwed it back on.

Electrician able to certify his work under these regulations wanting to wire my bathroom fan off the 10.8kw electric shower circuit. Dispicable I had to tell him that was wrong.
