have to agree it needs the vocals to be anything special
if you like instrumentals thats great but i prefer the whole package and not the component parts   ;)

My Mrs keeps asking the local karaoke if she can sing "Apache" or Albatross." He hasn't found the disks yet, but keeps promising, he will.

Weren't some Beatles tracks recorded with the lyric on one channel?

One track (can't remember which now) seemed to miss a bit of guitar as well.

That's what I thought - I sometimes listen to music at work with one earphone in and one out - and I occasionally come across songs, not just Beatles tracks, that suddenly have no vocals on them until I put the other earpiece in.

If you listen to Oh! Darling on there you can still hear some of the vocals faintly when Paul is really belting it out...

They were recorded on very primitive equipment and 8 track recording was in its infancy. I can hear the vocals on those tracks on youtube.
Loads of early recordings allow you to turn down either the right or left channel and leave either the vocals or the backing exposed.
