Hi everyone

[Copied over from Projects Forum]

I'm moving house soon and I'm looking to make my 4 yr old son the most awesome bed ever: He got diagnosed with autism back in January so we are going to town on his room with sensory displays etc. but in a spaceship/rocket/star wars theme.

Anyway the bed idea I have has storage built in underneath and to both sides of the sleeping area - to either end of the sleeping area I plan to have a light box with RGB colour changing led lighting (yellow area on diagram) - the light will be diffused through frosted acrylic and shine through holes cut in the side of the sleeping area to get something like the wall lights in this picture:http://www.wallpaperup.com/40314/St...orridor_movies_interior_film_sci-fi_tech.html

Anyhow, obviously I want this to be safe - I'm assuming I will need to vent the lightboxes at least at the top - drivers etc. will be mounted on the 'roof' or rear wall of the bed - well out of small arms reach but is this kind of setup even allowed - I'm assuming at the moment it is (having seen beds with TV's built in) but maybe with some restrictions?

I doubt LEDs will create enough heat for heat to be an issue.
As long as the drivers, wiring etc are kept well away from little fingers and any mains stuff is in proper enclosures I don't see a big issue. Just don't use cheap Chinese stuff off ebay.

I don't know how you plan on powering/switching this lighting, but I think the best (read safest) route in this instance is to go for the ones with the plug in wall-wart type power supply. That's the route I went with underneath my bed (mostly because I didn't have a lighting feed under my bed) but it works well for me.

Cheers - that is exactly what I'm planning on using.

Agree with what Spark123 said, also this may work for you  http://www.lightingever.co.uk/rgb-led-strip-light-waterproof.html

Also, a bit of topic and you probably already know about sites like spacekraft.co.uk, but just though I would mention it anyway. This post is reminding me of when I was younger and that of my primary schools Multi sensory room. And yes, I am proud to say that I have aspergers.
Thanks, it's good to have your input as my little one isn't really speaking yet, we know he loves spaceships, rockets etc but more than that ????? - have you used those strips before, do you think they're as good/better than these -

Yes, I have a 4m of RGB led strip light along the top of my cupboards in my kitchen that I got from a local shop called TLC. One thing to keep in mind of when you by the tape on it's own, you will need to by not only the controller, but also the driver. The power ratting of the driver that you will need will depend on the length of RGB led strip light.

The LED tape you mentioned is brighter than the kit I mentioned, but as I said above you also need to get the appropriate driver/controller to go with it.
