i have a bedroom where all the walls have been artexed and want to know is there an easy way to get rid of it or cover it. im not a plasterer and never done it before in my life but i hate the artex and would love to get rid of it or cover it. would it be expensive to get a platerer in to skim it or i seen ad on tv about some stuff u just put on the walls i think it was by polyfilla not sure. thanks

Morning Pioneer,

As no one else has replied to your post I thought I’d jump in, although I have little to offer.

Firstly I should admit to not being a plasterer. I can plaster and have plastered whole rooms in my house that are good enough to paint over, but not professional quality and not professional speed. I have also never used the skim stuff that you’re on about.

But having no knowledge has never stopped me having an opinion. :)

If you want a wall or ceiling plastered then you need to use plaster. There is nothing in these buckets of ready mixed gloop that make me think that they would magically mean that someone with no experience could make a decent job of going over an artexed wall.

It’d be good to hear from plasterers who have been called in to fix the mess people have got into using this stuff.

My advice would be to get in a plasterer. It is expensive, but worth the money. £400, or however much it is, is a lot of cash, but not offset against the next 30 years of not having to do it again. You could try plastering yourself, but with all the advice in the world that you’ll get from this board your room will look like a relief map of the Himalayas.

To plaster you need practice, practice, practice. I taught myself by plastering bathrooms and kitchens (mine and the in-laws) that were going to be covered with tiles and cabinets.

I’d be interested to hear the comments from a professional.

good advice therms!

this subject has been covered over and over again, done to death so to speak.

if you care to scan through the historical replies in this forum you will get all the answers you will need pioneer 1967.

ps the diy quick fix products from the diy sheds are garbage!.

good luck

i agree, stay well away, you'll end up making a right mess with an electric sander once you've tried to smooth a wall over with that stuff.

skimming is an art and can't be done without practice, however you could try covering with plasterboard? using this and tapered edge boards and only taping and jointing them you should be able to get decent results.
