Help!

I have a ceiling light in my spare bedroom which has stopped working. I first tried changing the bulb and that hasn't worked. I then unscrewed the rose cover to see if any wires had come loose, which as far as I can see they haven't. Finally I took the light switch off and saw nothing wrong, except for what looks like some burn marks. All the other lights work and the fuse box doesn't trip.

I would be grateful if someone could offer some advice.

It's possible that your light switch could be knackered. The scorch marks suggest that it could have gone open circuit even when you close the switch.

Can you feel any resistance in the switch compared with normal?

If you think it might be the switch then isolate the lighting circuit and connect Common & L1 at the switch via a terminal block. Turn the power back on and see if the light works. That will at least rule out the switch.

If your spare bedroom is the last light on the lighting circuit then it is also possible that a cable may have come loose at the previous connection (possibly the rose in another bedroom/bathroom). Do you possess a multimeter? If so then check for a voltage at the ceiling rose. This will confirm whether you actually have 230v at the fitting.
