My sisters ex decided to change the bedroom light for a new one before he left.
What happens now is when you operate the switch in bedroom A, if the light is on in bedroom B it goes out.
Im staying there for a few days so does this sound like an easy fix.
i wont see the wiring in the rose until i get there but just asking up front.
There are no other issues.

Sounds like a simple mis-wiring at the ceiling rose.

Hi,
So when I get there a photo of the rose & wiring would solve this simple enough.

You would need to identify which cable (loop-in, switch drop etc) is which.

I am now at the house.
Here is the situation.
Bedroom 1
Bedroom 2
Bedroom 3

Bedroom 1 light switch must be in the on position for the lights to work correctly in Bedroom 2 & 3.

If bedroom 1 light switch is in off position then operating lights in bedroom 2 & 3 has no affect.

I taken off the light so far in bedroom 1 & 2 but I only see the 3 wires earth, live, neutral.

Do I need to take down the light now in bedroom 3 to see what the wiring is like ?

If you only have three wires at bed1 light, then you probably

have a junction box somewhere, could be in ceiling above the light.

I taken off the light so far in bedroom 1 & 2 but I only see the 3 wires earth, live, neutral.

Edit: check the loft as EFLI says...

If not, open the switch in bedroom 1 and see if there is 3 twin and earth cables in there instead.

Gaz :)

Will need to check light switch but first.

I've now taken down the light in bedroom 3.
Same as bedroom 1 & 3 only the 3 wires pulling through ceiling.

I've also noticed the light in bedroom 1 does not come on/work.

So as a test bedroom 1 light was swapped with bedroom 2 light.

Bedroom 1 still not working where bedroom 2 is working. So lights/bulbs are ok and wiring the issue.

If I get up in attic first what will I be looking for or see ?

All 3 bedroom wires going to one large junction box or will each be independent meaning the wires pulling through the ceiling is just extension wires etc.

Thanks.

The odd thing is that this guy only changed the light fitting, so you would expect any mistakes to be there.

If he had also changed the switch that would explain any possible mistake at the switch.

It's hard to imagine that he would have any reason to fiddle with a junction box in the loft. Unless perhaps the new light is in a different position to the old one, or there are now multiple lights.

Is it possible that there is "loop in" type connections at the light fitting but they have been pushed up into the ceiling?

I would ask sister:
- Did he also change switches?
- Did he move the light, or add/remove additional lights?
- What did the previous light look like, did it have a rose?
- Does she remember him going into the loft?

The 3 bedrooms have all the same lights.
She thinks it was take one down and put one up in the same position as no marks at all on any ceiling.
Can't remember about old light or going into attic.

I will look at switches.

And pop my head in loft.

I can't get to the switch in bedroom 1 yet but behind the switch in bedroom 2 is as in photo.

So do I continue to look at switch in bedroom 1 now seeing all these wires in bedroom 2 switch.

Does this help you.

In the switch in bedroom 1, the Reds will have been connected wrongly.
Open it up and - before you do anything else - label the cables and write down how it is currently connected.

You may find that the switch has 3 terminals. It should be wired with two wires in one terminal, one wire in another terminal, and nothing in the third terminal. But it may have been wired up with one wire in each terminal; I think that would explain your symptoms.

Yes all 3 lights now been told.
In my earlier post I mentioned bedroom 2 & 3 would only work if bedroom 1 switch was in on position. I also said bedroom 1 light doesn't operate.

I just got the switch off the wall, some silicone around it, why I don't know ??

But

All black wires are in connector.
All earth are in a connector.

3 red wires go to the switch "one was not connected" I've also noticed is upside down in respect to the others so I think he was in bedroom 1 switch ?

Anyway.
3 red wires as below.

Top red L1
Bottom left red L3
Bottom right red L4 is where I've connected the lose red wire.

Now what happens is,
Bedroom 1 light works as it should.
Bedroom 2 & 3 lights are both on but when I switch in bedroom 1 this makes 2 & 3 go out.

Switch off bedroom 1 and 2 & 3 come back on again.
