Hi Guys,

I am going to tile in the recess around my wood burning stove.
The distance between the stove and the tiles will be approx 250 mm.
What type of tile is best for this area, what should I look for or avoid?

Any ceramic or clay tile should do, bare in mind the process they go through to be manufactured!

I would supplement this high a heat resistant tile adhesive and grout.

I tend to sand/cement render around wood burners.

Ceramic tiles will be fine, just make sure to use a flexible adhesive.

A ceramic tile spends several hours in a kiln at a top temperature between 900 and 1300 C. Depending on the type of tile and the glaze, it may do this two or three times. The temperature *inside* a wood burning stove is unlikely to exceed 300 C...

On the back I will use cement board on to the brick work then tile on to that.

That should work. Cement board (Hardiebacker or similar) comes in 6mm and 12mm thicknesses, and is usually fixed to solid walls with Gripfill-type adhesive, as well as screwed and plugged. Make sure you fix the tiles to the board with a flexible adhseive as there will be some expansion and contraction.

Cheers
