My garden slopes badly and im going to level it off and build a small retaining wall no higher than 3 bricks high to create a terrace.

Is brick the best way to create this and do i just need to create a small trench for the brick to sit in with a bed of concrete?

im pretty new to all this so any help would be great.

With a small retainer like you are after, you have a lot of choice. The wall will not be holding much weight, so the questions are:
what finish are you after
how much do you want to spend
how much time do you have
In a garden, personally, for the money and effort just use sleepers.

But if you are going for a single brick wall, Id use grandfathers (like dense breeze blocks) as a base course without footings. Put the grandfathers a few inches below the lowest ground level, and throw in a few weep holes for the drainage.

Thanks for your reply, we are pretty flexible,

Our garden already has a 2-3ft retaining wall made out of the old used sleepers so maybe thats the way to go.

would that be a similar type of affair, digging a trench and then just resting them in and securing them?
