Hmm didn't really think that reply through properly. 
I heard today theres a stanley one in wilkinsons only 12 pound and was told its actually pretty good

I find a drill is pretty good at finding timber studs.... not quite so clever on the old pipes though...
Although it's not so good at finding studs, I've found that a plumbers apprentice trying to nail down floorboards at 4pm on a Friday afternoon can be very efficient at finding pipes and cables.

Personally I find my drill never finds timber studs but is perfect for finding pipes and cables.
