Best timber for a stud wall?

What size timber should I use for a stud wall, splitting one bedroom in two?

Presumably it will need to be planed, square edge stuff but what dimensions? Do the head and sole pieces need to be thicker than the vertical studs or the same size?

Use 4" x 2" sawn timber, planed is an uneccessary expense; the sole & head plates don't need to be any different.

Most sheds stock cls which is just under 3 x 2, planed with rounded edges, and it is dead straight.
Its about £1.70 per 2.4m length and is ideal for studwork.

Even though PAR is more expensive, it makes it so much easier to make the framework accurate than when using rough sawn. IMHO.

Mind you, my local timber merchant has recently had some sawn timber that's so smooth I've been using it for boxing in.
