I’ve currently got a Potterton Lynx 2 combi boiler that is making a right old racket (banging, hissing, groaning..)!!

I believe this to be down to crud/scale in the primary heat exchanger. I’ve tried various methods of cleaning the system out (mains flushing, fernox boiler silencer, etc.) I’ve even fitted one of those ‘Magnaclean' devices on the return pipe up to the boiler. All of which have helped but have not eliminated the problem.

So I’ve got myself some Fernox DS40 but I’m a little weary on how to apply it as I’ve heard horror storys of it creating loads of leaks on older systems.

Is it just a case of putting the whole lot in and letting it circulate round the system for a week (as the manual suggests) or maybe shutting off all the other radiators in the house bar the one in the bathroom (where the boiler is situated so there for closest) and letting it run for 24-hours?

Any advice appreciated! :D

Thanks

I would recommend that you close most rads and put about 1/4 of the can of DS40 and leave it for about 2-3 hours on a low temp and then increase it for about 3-4 hours.

If that greatly improves it then repeat it.

If not then repeat using about 1/4 can of DS3 but for about 3-4 hours at a higher temperature. If that improves it drain and repeat.

Cheers Tony, appreciate your input.. :)

So, the plan so far is to:

1. Drain system completely.
2. Shut off all radiators bar the one in the bathroom
3. Dissolve 1/4 of the DS40 crystals in some hot water and pour into the system
4. Pressure system to about 1 bar (normal pressure) and leave to run for about 5 – 7 hours increasing temperature about half way through.
5. Repeat processes 1, 3 and 4 above a few times until noise stops.

As far as the neutralising agent goes, is it only worth putting this in after I’ve used all of the DS40 and do I just need to run it through the boiler and the 1 radiator or is it worth putting it through the whole system just to be safe?

Thanks again.

Thats not exactly what I have recommended !
