Best wood paint for stair case

Just a quick question.What is the best brand/type of wood paint for a stair well ,I was told to use gloss but it always seems to have a really lumpy finish and make it look cheap.

Satin or eggshell.....depending on your personal preference

Satin finish isnt as shiny as gloss.....but very durable

Eggshell isnt as shiny as satin...again very durable.

Stick to oil based in this instance as water based drys very quick and you may find you keep losing the edge when going from one side of the spindle to the other.
