I have no sympathy with BG as they are guilty as charged.
But it does make me laugh how some of the independants on here slag them off for this yet openly boast/say in the CC (a private forum on here for gas registered) that they can charge more than they normally would when quoting against BG (by many £££) and still change these so called condemmed boilers even when they know they are repairable.
Slag BG off but still feed off there lies makes you just as bad

Though I'm a RGI but banned from the combustion chamber pot, I don't disagree with you there mate & I understand that it's always open season on BG. I like many, love to have a pop at them, but yes it is as you say double standards. Like most contractors it music to my ears when you visit a customer & they say 'well I've had a quote from SG/BG'.
However, what I really dislike about SG/BG, and we've all have come across this; miss-selling products & services to OAPs.
As for the BBC's Watchdog, c'mon!!.............they're are making a telly programme in a genre that's had it's day. Most of the British public find this stuff boring & outdated.

If a customer invites me to quote for a new boiler that BG has condemned, then I will quote for a new boiler and not try to fix it... The customer hasn't given me permission to do that.... By the time that I get there the customer has already decded that a new boiler is needed.... How much of my valuable time should I spend trying to convince them otherwise?
The nice thing about following BG, as I stated elsewhere is that I have the luxury of not having to shave the price... I can afford to replace the pump with a new Grunfoss and motorised valves, similarly the scabby old TRVs can be replaced as can the cotrols, Honeywell not cheap stuff and I can offer a five year guarantee on the full system not just the boiler. also any minor plaster repairs from removing stuf from the walls or round the flue is made good ready for painting..... Just as BG does

A large majority of independant gas fitters are now very quiet at this time of the year and are struggling to make ends meet.
To make themselves feel better they log onto this site and bitch about there biggest competitor. It's always been the same and will never change.
But when British Gas need contractors for the busy times they are inundated with offers, all these gas fitters come crawling to British gas to do contract work. Very strange.

I like BG.... Never worked for them, never will but I must admit that I do benefit from them "At risking" or "Immediately dangerousing" appliances for non gas related issues.
As said they do set the benchmark for pricing and help prevent the better quality independants from having to slug it out with knuckle dragging cheap end independants
