Our Bissell had a burning smell so my partner swiched it off but it hasnt worked since. Is this more likely to be the motor or electrics?

Burnerman is probably correct.

But many years ago I worked for a firm that had a sideline in repairing vacuum cleaners. I would be presented with 20+ vacuum cleaners all 'knackered' to repair, usually 1 or 2 had a problem that was fixed in a few minutes, the rest needed the dust bag emptying. A nice little earner, he used to charge 30 minutes per cleaner or about 10 hours for fixing 20 machines.

Have you checked the dust bag?

Thanks guys, I do think its the motor. Took it apart and the wiring is simple and I have tested there is power at the switch. Ordered a new motor this morning.
