Black chunks in loft

Hi ,

In my home loft there are black chunks of size upto 15 cm. hanging with roof. Some are fallen on the loft floor. Can some pls tell me what are these ? Is these are harmful and take any extra care to remove these ?

To me it looks like the felt is damaged and the pieces fell on loft floor.
It become softer than paper and easily faliing on flooe.


Actually I moved to new house and accessing internet on my BB. I can't upload pics.

Attached photograph of the loft and black material hangings onto the roof surface underneath. Please suggest. Would appreciate useful comments.

Sarking (aka underfelt). Nothing harmful but some daylight (I think) showing through on the last photo, could indicate that the roof may not be fully watertight.

Hi burnerman,

yes you are right its bits/pieces of underfelt. Can you suggest how this can be corrected and what actually needs to be done in such cases. I have also attached pics : //www.diynot.com/network/yashyashm/albums/
