Hi

I had a wooden worktop installed about 3 months ago. I've been treating it with oil regularly as instructed. I've just noticed that there are quite a few black dots coming up on the wood, near the wall. I'm guessing this is due to damp as I have been trying to resolve damp issues with this wall. However, Does anyone know how to get rid of these dots? I've tried sanding them off but they seem pretty much ingrained.

Any help much appreciated

Unfortunately, the tannins in oak reacts with iron to cause these black stains. This is why Oilman asked you whether you had used wire wool, as strands of the wool often get caught in the grain of oak, causing the stains.

It is probable that an iron trivet or other kitchen utensil has been left in contact with the oak worktop. Moisture makes the problem worse.

About the only thing that will remove the stains is Oxylic Acid - it comes in crystal form from specialist wood-finishing supplies companies such as Morrells Woodfinishes. Mix with a little water and apply to the stains - they will fade away.

The worktop will then need sanding down and re-oiling. Remember to avoid letting iron (or steel) coming into contact with oak.

Cheers
