Block paving driveway

Hey fellas, a bit of advice would be much appreciated , the mother in law had a block drive done earlier in the year and all looked fine to begin with, but six months down the road the drive is starting to dip quite considerably.

Just looking to get educated before we call the contractor back to advise.

Yes call them back

That basket weave pattern is prone to rutting where the wheels roll over it, as it does not spread the load as well as herringbone. Either way, it's failed and needs rectifying - check the depth of hardcore, add more if necessary and it wants re-compacting.

Doesnt look too promising. as woody says basketweave is the worst choice for a drive and seeing as its got to be lifted it should be relaid in herringbone ideally.

Its most likely lack of depth of sub base or not well enough compacted. Could possibly be too deep bedding sand too. I would lift a small sample area somewhere in the middle and take a cross section to check depths of the bedding sand and sub base.

The problem here is that if the sub base is defective simply adding more might not work as it may screw your levels etc Be prepared to be firm as it may all need dug out deeper rather than simply scraping back the sand and bunging in a bit more Type 1.

From the picture and time frame id be surprised if it has more than a few inches anyway.

Thanks fellas. really appreciate the input. I'll refrain from casting aspersions on the contractor for the minute and give the benefit of the doubt until he's given a chance to rectify, but from you've told me it appears the job hasn't been done properly.
