Hi Everyone, Happy New year to you all. I have an old Worchester CDi24, Only been in the house 7 months, but for a few months now I have only had hot water if I put the centrall heating on first, I have had the diverter valve changed, and the boiler fires up when the heating is off and I call for water !!! Can anyone suggest my next plan of attack, or am I flogging a dead horse with this old boiler, I dread to see my next gas bill

Thanks all in anticipation

not sure what you are asking....the boiler is supposed to heat your water when you turn on a tap

Which idiot changed the divertor valve when the hot water was working O.K

When the heating is off you will get hot water. Thats how they work.
I suggest you tell us what controls you have to turn the Central heating on as this is the first area to look at.
If the boiler doesnt know there is a demand for heating then it wont come on.
If its doing hot water there really cannot be much wrong with the boiler. I suspect it may be a clock or roomstat that is dodgey.

The 24CDi is not the worst boiler you could have by the way. Theres thousands of them about so dont throw in the towel yet.

Think I need to clear this up, when the heating is off, I get a little bit of hot water then it goes off. If I turn the heating on and wait about 5 minutes and turn the tap on then I get hot water. To turn the heating on I press a booster button on the control console, this turns the heating on for an hour. If you need any more info please leave a note

Why do I not get hot water when I turn the tap on, and the boiler fires up ?

Well if I didnt know you had a new D/valve fitted I would say the D/Valve is knackered.
Basically when you turn on the tap without heating the valve should move to make microswitches. If the heating is on you will get hot water but its a work around as the boiler thinks its heating the rads.
Was the valve fitted new?? and are you sure it was definatly fitted.
Were you there when it was as most of the water section has to be removed to change it so its a good hours job minimum.

It sounds to me as if the diverter was only repaired and NOT totally replaced.

I would guess that when cold the manifold section is not following the diaphragm movement but it does when hot.

The test of this is with the boiler cold and a hot tap run for say 10 minutes, do you cet cold water and hot rads?

I will try the idea of running the tap to see if I get hot radiators. I do remember when he struggled to fix it, the little micro switch was very difficult to set, he said it was right at the end of its adjustment range.
Just to recap, with everything off, if I turn my hot water on the boiler fires this doesn't necessarily mean I will be getting hot water to my taps?

Suddenly the penny is starting to drop.

What could it be if I turn everything off, then turn tap on and the boiler doesn't fire up, as this used to happen also ?

What was done to it?

i would say you really need to get someone to look at this....either the guy who did your previous attempted repair or someone else.

even if we manage to diagnose the fault it looks certain to be something that an engineer needs to fix.

something odd is definately going on around the diverter/diaphragm area

From my memory the Worchester does not have any adjustment on the microswitches.

Try a different engineer perhaps. :?

that probably means he tried to tape something on to the end of the disc

There are lights on the front of the boiler does the hot water light come on when the tap is running if it is do rads heat up if so d/v valve passing if no hw light comes on microswitch on dv valve not making, both faults point to new dv valve req'd horrible job to change your last eng prob tried to put something on plunger to bridge gap and hoped it would last for few weeks, old trick on worcester 240 glue a 5p to it,don't do anymore lost me horse

Bovine excrement filter activated :!: I suppose its a change from the smell of curry that I am used to  .

This translates to

He didnt change the switch head over and theres a faulty microswitch in it.
OR
He has lost the plastic end off the pin that operates the microswitch
OR
He hasn't got the circlip on properly that holds the switch head in place
OR
As suggested the "new" DV may not be so new or is otherwise faulty

Thanks for all the help but still confused, I was there when he changed the diverter valve, definately new, I sat the whole time with him ( pick up tips that way !! ). I have had my head under the unit, the micro switch makes when water call, little black plastic disc there, circlip tightly in place, plunger comes out of diverter valve ( took microswitch off to see )

This website is great, and the 'crack' is helpful, I understand the noble art of the plumber, but I am finding it very hard to get anyone out to look at my 'little ' problem, and whilst I can still get hot water by turning the heating on it is not critical.

Any other ideas why this problem is not clearing, do I need to bed the new valve in? but as I say it is activating, and the boiler is working.

Cheers

I know that you are being very grateful to us but you are not doing some of the things asked!

With the heating OFF, when you run a hot tap does the light on the front of the boiler come on ???

I think there are two microswitches on your diverter. Its possiblt that one of them is faulty. They are easy to test for anyone able to use a multimeter.
