Hi I have a conventional boiler eco tec 428 valiant how much should a yearly boiler service cost? I live in London I have been quoted £200 this seems a lot ? Any advice would be great thank you

Shop around that's a crazy price.

How old is it and when did it have a full service (burner gasket replaced etc)...there's often a label somewhere with the date.

Does that include parts?

A set of electrodes and burner gasket every 5 years is only £40, the rest of the job is just cleaning and safety checks.

Hi thanks for the advice I recently brought the property so have no details about the boiler, the last service is aug 2018, would a reasonable price for a service be £100 ?

What was done in Aug 2018...what does it say in the manuals logbook or on the receipt.
When I was in London I'd normally charge £60 to £80 plus parts if necessary but I look at the long game and get years of repeat business from customers.
No VAT for me either.
If you're somewhere with non existent parking, congestion charging or a rough area where the vans going to get screwed etc you'll naturally pay more.

Hi thanks I didn’t get the boiler manuals or log book dunno where the previous owner put them just have the last service report, so not much info the house is easily accessible with parking and the plumber who quoted was local

No point, looking in the manual was only clutching at straws to see if the last eng. had noted what had been done.
Can you post the last service report...just blank the address etc.

He’s the last service report although I don’t know how good the services are from British Gas sometimes I wonder if they even check anything, my boiler is a conventional boiler not combi but it has a expansion vessel which I thought are only fitted to combi, I think it’s all been done wrong

Pop the boiler front panel off (it won't expose the combustion chamber) and see if there's a label stuck on somewhere..it should have the last date the chamber seal was replaced (and in theory the heat exchanger cleaned).
The controls panel also flips down..sometimes tuck on there.

How could anyone possibly consider that boiler safe (and tick the box) with 2 isolating valves fitted on the pipework above especially with the handles still fitted.
If the safety valve was plumbed in before the valves you could argue the valves are not such a problem.

Err what makes it unsafe with isolating valves, I’m not a plumber so I have no idea also I’m a bit hesitant to pop the front cover off

Dare you to shut them off and fire up the boiler :)
It'll be a race between the thermistors shutting down the burner (failing to detect a temperature difference), or the heat exchanger going pop due to water expansion perhaps even boiling.
I'd bet my life it would go bang since the thermal lag of temperature sensing will loose to expansion.
There is no proper water flow detection on these boilers...in fact they will happily fire up with no water in them.

Water must always be allowed to expand otherwise extremely high pressures can be ensured with resultant damage.

The front cover doesn't expose anything particularly unsafe (don't touch anything electrical though)...there's a separate sealed chamber cover.

Most of the time when I worked there a BG service is a "poke and go" so they just take a reading from the flue gas and go.

They have missed a number of issues.

1, cant have any sort of isolating valve between the boiler and expansion vessel safety relief valve.
2, no vertical flue support fitted
3, the flue clamp doesn't look like its been drilled and screwed

I'd be asking for a full service, So at the very least, New Burner door seals (ideally would be done every 3 years on these) removing and flushing out the condensate trap, checking and setting the gas/air mix, releasing the system pressure and charging the expansion vessel) That will negate the most likley faults that can be with good servicing, and go some way to ensuring the boilers running safe and well. The full flue in its entirety should be checked and if thats all the flue that you have could be screwed properly with a support fitted in 10 minutes with the right tools and support, and the valve handles removed to prevent accidental shut off at least. Its also a requirement under the british standards now to check/test inhibitor levels in the system and typically renew inhibitor every 5 years.

If they did all the above for £200 then that wouldnt be a terrible deal for london prices.

Go on the vaillant website and find a local vaillant installer, they would likley be best placed to service it, vaillant would aswell, but they will only work on the boiler so may well not check expansion vessel, and could just leave a warning notice regarding the flue rather than correcting it to make it safe.
