Hi
I suspect my electric boiler thermostat (old cilinder type boiler) is knackered and I am not sure how to replace it. I imagine is a mater of taking all cables off and pulling off the copper bar and put a new one in. Is that so? and were do I buy one.
I also wanted to ask if it is possible to swap the top thermostat for the bottom one as I never use the top one which seems to be OK. Do they have the same propreties?

What are the symptoms? What checks have you done to rule out the element?

Yup.

Here.

Only if they are the same size, which often (always?) they are not.

Thanks for the advice.
Well, I just moved in and the boiler has not being working apparently for a long time and I checked for voltage with my tester and it seems OK. I then set up the thermostat to 80C and still nothing and after reading some comments in this forum I suspect that the thermostat may be knackered cause the boiler is quite old and I suspect the last tenants have being useing the top heater for two years.
Before I buy a new one I would like to check for Ohms but I am not sure how to do it properly...Any advice would be appreciated,
North

Can you take a picture?

It sounds like your trying to swap an immersion thermostat with a cylinder thermostat.

How do you turn the HW on? Is there a timer somewhere, and is it definately turned on?

Well I had the idea of swapping the thermostats but apparently is not going to be possible so I am not going to even try. There is no timer in the HW it just swiches on and off according to the water temperature.
I do not have a camera to take pictures with but everything seems OK i.e. cables connected etc...I want to check for ohms but I am not sure how to do it with the tester...

Disconnect all the cables connected to the element, set the meter to a resistance range and measure between the L&N terminals of the element. Should be in the region of 20-30Ω

Thanks all for your advice. I am fed uo with this. I will check for ohms this weekend and if It is borken then I will get a replacement or call an expert. I can not waste more time with this...
Thanks again,
North
