Cust reports pipes bang in the middle of the night.
Bathroom rad gets hot

No frost stat.
Judging by MI, probably no bypass ext to boiler. ("It doesn't need one")
3 x 2 ports, horstmann 3 channel timer.
All I can think is that the boiler comes on by itself.

Is this a known fault on this boiler?

Chris the boiler incorporates an integral system frost protection feature that can be activated if required, perhaps yours has been  yes it runs the boiler pump every 4 hours summer and winter.

Time clocks also have frost protection built in on some model.

Getting desperate, do the pipes bang during the day as well or just when everyone goes to bed, Could be the pipes/rads shrinking, ready for an early expansion in the morning.

Probably also has the feature of turning pump once every 24 hours. Not familiar with the exact model though.

Frost protection cuts in at 8 deg and runs until it reaches 15 and pump runs for 1 minute if it hasn't run in the last 24 hours. (as above)

In spite of what John says, I dont think the frost protection can be turned off ( other than removing the power to the boiler! ).

You have the choice to activate it Tony.

To switch the system frost protection on, depress the + & - temperature control buttons at the same time for 5 seconds. The display will show 18 or 10.

press the Summer/Winter button marked (tap/tap/rad) until the display shows 30. The 3 indicates that the installer parameter for the system frost protection has been selected. The 0 indicates that the system frost protection is switched off. Press the + temperature control button until the display read 31. The 1 indicates that the system frost protection has been switched on.

1 minute after the parameter has been set the display will return to normal operation.

To switch it off repeat the above to display 30.

That's interesting because the MI I have say:

  • 2.3 Frost Protection
    1. The boiler does not have integral frost
protection. It is recommended that the installer
fits a suitable protection device to the system
    controls if required.
Which model are you thinking of? I've been through the 100/2 etc manuals at partsarena and they say much the same, but I wouldn't be surprised if there were a variant which was different. Boiler is about 5 years old I think, though that could be wrong.

Judging from a.n.other potty, it could have a Bahama board in it anyway...

Shouldn't be "pump protection routine", as the boiler is in daily use.

Queried whether it could be trapped pipes moving with contraction and she 's certain it isn't. Also that bathroom rad comes on. Says it doesn't do it during the day.

Interestingly as Tony would say, there seems to be different manuals about.

I fitted the 130HE and quoted from that

Even so the 100HE manual I have doesn't have a 2.3 being a part of optional extras.

Perhaps as you say there's different models or upgrades for the 100HE.

The plot thickens

are we talking about the 100HE or the 100HE plus?. Definitely one on the + and the 100HE does list a 'temperature protection thermostat' in instructions

MI (pdf I have) is for Baxi 100 HE
G.C.No 41 075 32

It does once mention
  • Controls
    boiler thermostat, safety thermostat,
    flow switch, electronic flame sensing,
    temperature protection thermostat &
    condensate blockage sensor
But no mention of what it is. No mention of frost - except you gotta fit your own..

Eh? I'm quoting from page 4, section 2.3

The "plus" doesn't mention one either, so the manuals must be wrong. Presumably it works off an ntc like the Ideal one Tony's scrapping over?

Apparently it's been doing it for a while(bonkin..)
I'm going to it because it has stopped dead. I was only told about the noise when I asked if there was anything else wrong. Just for thought-space I said
"Not dripping or anything?" and got
"Oh yes, we always keep its saucer under it".

:D

Aw gee, you sussed I made the last one break down just so I could be with you?

Wasn't so bad but making me walk to the indian on my own in the middle of London was inexcusable
