Bonkin Baxi

Dont take any notice Chris, I keep on offering to collect John from Willesden Green tube and he insists on walking instead.

Anyone would think that I was a bad driver and he was scared to come with me!

Tony

man

Back to the Baxi - blinding glimpse of the obvious resolves the frost-stat question - there's no permanent live connected to one of these!

So all I can think is that one of the 3 2port microswitches is deciding to "make" at 3am every now and again, bringing on the boiler and pump with no valve open.

They all feel ok, so what would yous do?

How are the MVs wired Chris, through a relay or all twisted together if you know what I mean.

one or the other (cylinder stat ?) could be giving you a back feed and holding the others in.

Er, there are three off, two ports :?

I know you said earlier

How are they wired up one to each channel, how are the commons to the boiler wired, is there any relays, suspect the programmer could be faulty, had several of the same sort, has yours got the frost protection built into the programmer, some progs have.

Pssssssssssssssssst love the pic good likeness

It's a 3 channel programmer with 3 x 2 ports -. Standard S plan as I said earlier
3 stats. No need for relays. Auxilliary switches in parallel as std .

Back-feed from cylinder stats holds 3 ports open not 2 ports... (unless you can tell me how?) But a valve would be open...

S plan programmer, faulty or not, is connected to valves not the boiler so the boiler can't come on without a valve being open...

Horstmann prog doesn't have a frost stat, an even if it did, it would open a valve....

But it doesn't bang if a valve's open, that's normal operation, so none of the above could do it.

Short of changing all the 2 port heads to sort out a dodgy switch in one of them, I thought I could change the 3 microswitches. Lots cheaper and not so bad with 3 to do. Must admit I've forgotten how it's done.

Going back to the boiler, are you saying that the boiler is only given power from the combined oranges out of the MVs ???

If that were the case then the only way the boiler could come on is if a MV micro were closed. Normally only happens when a MV is open ( or wet ).

Am I missing something again?

Tony

Oranges, yes.
Boiler is the 100HE, not the 100HEplus which has a permanent live.

Para 2: I concur. And they're bone dry, clean, don't seem to be intermittent/rattly/loose/weak when poked.

I can't think of anything to miss.
One zone is for a Megaflo (but no additional 2 port)
One is for ufh, radio stat I put in
One is conventional rads cct.

Only additional info - it doesn't make the noise for long. If it were a naughty switch you might expect it would keep shut.. It only does it occasionally, but any time at night.

I think were all missing something Tony

Pull the plug on the boiler when you go to bed and see what happens.

If the DWH valve was stuck open you could possibly have a gravity circuit thats taking the water out the cylinder, or do we know for certain that the boiler is firing

'snot my boiler! I suggested they turn the boiler stat to zero to try it but it's intermittent anyway.

They haven't got up to go down to the boiler to check it's on, but say it sounds like its coming from the boiler and the pipes are being hit with a hammer.
Grundfos is whisper -quiet. SHouldn't be on anyway of course.

Valvery is top floor beside Megaflo, boiler on ground floor.

(How would a bit of gravity circ make banging anyway!?)

All a bit

Could the lady be dreaming about the boiler coming on?

I sometimes dream about boilers, even about their owners too?

My worst nightmare is about a boiler that I cannot fix.

I actually went to one today for the third time! It works fine when I am there but the owner keeps on saying that it rattles itself after I have gone and he wants a new boiler to be fitted. He even says that he has a video of it but we did not stop to watch his boiler video as he had not given us any coffee.

Back to expansion and the other way  would also explain why the bathroom rad is hot, as it could be of the cylinder primaries.

Think we will have have a re-cap as it's getting confused.

trying to think of a problem we had with a megaflo but I think it was the other way round to your problem.

More thinking out loud after sleep ;)

I'd forgotten the bit about the bathroom rad, will check. Pump's right by the valves so can't see how it can be on primaries. One valve could let by a little I suppose.

Response recently had a mysterious fault(the one with the broken casting) which a total of about 7 various engineer visits didn't see happening. Suspicion now is that the tenant was making it up to avoid paying the rent.

Boiler comes on and bangs but only at night

Advance the clock and turn night into day.

Thermal cut-out or cylinder stat is playing silly buggers with the valve.

Identify if the rad is off the primary cicuit.

Expansion and contraction.

Radio stat is picking up a stray signal.

good night
