I have original (circa 1890's) 2 by 3 joists that run length ways along the ceiling and are begining to bow quite badly. Is the solution just to replace entirely with larger joists? The reason this has come up is the fact that the plasterer has taken down the mortar ceiling because it was bowing and he can push the joists up with his hand!

Id replace them if they are bowed really bad and can be moved with his hand anyway

if you reboard it it will look like a banana

acro jack joist to level and add secondery joist to pull out bows.bowed timbers can be used in opossing direction to counter bows
