Hi,

We have a independent building in the garden which we are looking to make some alterations to.

Its made of a single brick, we are extending it by moving one of the wall slightly out. This new wall is a double skin cavity.

This wall will be 4.5 meters long and we want to install a large patio door. This wall is also going to carry the weight of the roof too.

The return off this wall will aslo have another large opening.

We need some advise on how to build this corner up.

The question we have is, should we build it with a pillar or will a cavity wall corner just wide enough to sit both lintels from both openings be ok

Your advice would be very much appreciated

A quick sketch hopefully give yoou the information needed.

The roof joist will be running from the back wall down to the wall marked 4.5m which will have the patio door

You'll need a substantial 3 brick return not just a pillar. Cavity or 1 brick thick on a suitable foundation. Or something like a 100mm x 8mm box section with welded top and base plates and shorter returns and thinner wall.
