Just finished painting the exterior woodwork and noticed that the odd brick here and there is turning powdery. You can push a finger in and extract red dust from the surface of the brick so they are quite soft and "powdery" but the mortar is OK. Should I be concerned and is there anything that needs to be done about this? Most bricks are sound and it's not confined to one particular area either. The house is still covered by an NHBC guarantee.

Brick might have been **** wet through when it was laid. As the water comes out over the course of years it brings salts with it that then crystallize

Bit of brick acid should clean it off but don't be surprised if it keeps coming for a while
