there are around 7.5m pensioners in the uk i assume if 5% where cold that would be around £21 for each off the 5%
of course we should look after the needy at home

now this answer will seem flippant as i am sure you question was retorical but things need to be in contexct rather than in isolation
the actual amount given in foreign aid is about 0.7% or 70p in every one hundred pounds off gross national product

Even if I believed those figures (which I don't) I'd want my contributions to buy some blankets for our own pensioners, Cancer drugs for our own little kids suffering because the drugs are deemed too expensive, homeless people..... The list is endless.

And I'm certainly no bleeding heart liberal.

It's just quite simply wrong. IMO

if you know me you will know i do my research as much as possible
i will present all facts i find even if they are against what i thought
indeed in this case i thought it was 0.3 but found it to be 0.7 so eddited my post accordingly :D

there are about 12.25% off the population are pensioners
so if we assume we have a 65m population that would be around 8m pensioners
which comment or figure dont you accept and i will link to the source

Is that not an awful lot of money?

what do you suggest ??
do we ignore the rest off the world or try and even out the injustices in the world??
a lot off our wealth is on the back off slavery or invading other countries and taking there natural resources
surely we owe it to those far worse off than us to help :(

The Romans invaded many countries, does that mean Italy should pay? Or the Portuguese?

no one should suffer for the sins off there forefathers
but should that stop us helping others who are worse off??

Yeah, I do know you, never agree with you :D

I saw you had changed the figures but that didn't really matter, I've always been more interested in opinions than links.

No. but I would rather help the people of THIS country that are worse off. You know, those people that lived and fought in wars for us. Rather than some far off tribe who probably hate us anyway.

We are constantly told that there are no funds available, yet they can't send money abroad quick enough.

Cameron even sent his socks.

I am not suggesting anything but you seem to be implying the amount is negligible.

According to wikipedia the GDP of the UK is £1.45 trillion (million million?).

0.7% of this is £10.15 billion, ~ £28 million per day.

That is £1,268 per pensioner or £169 per person.

(A similar amount as the net contribution to the E.U.)

I hope calculations correct.

the gdp is what we produce [gross domestic produce]
from that we need to deduct costs like materials wages and infrastructure [i think lol]
so the actual amount will be a percentage off disposable income which would make the 0.7% far larger perhaps 3%off disposable income??
